Jude is going to be my new Favorite Shen heroine. They see the softening toward the heroine, they learn about his past, and they see the man he can be, making readers putty in another Shen hero’s hands. ![]() What LJ shen has mastered, though, is turning this cold hearted hero into someone readers care about. He is at times crude with his comments and humor but it fits with the man she has created. The man made me blush, and there are no limits to the things he says and does to satiate himself and Jude! I swear I combusted reading these scenes. The one thing Celian wins is the dirty mouth award. This man is on Vicious level when it comes to his cold heart, but he is also a man of integrity and brutal truth, even if it cuts a person to the core, making him a bit more honorable than he originally appears. I found that I enjoyed this side of Shen’s writing just as much as her angst driven books.Ĭelian is everything fans have come to expect from her heroes. Skin II was one of the poems in the section on race that I found profound in imagery and parallels, perhaps a way for the unaware to understand the burden of racial representation. ![]() These are probably the ones that most benefit from performance. There are poems in the first section that feel a little too arch, a little too self-conscious, but not often. His style reminds me a bit of Adrienne Rich no particular rhyme or metre, with enough unused space to let you know each word is quite chosen. IV is perhaps about survival and hope, and II is about relationships, but you know how poetry is. Section III was particularly good, with thoughts on race, gender and identity, deserving several reads. ![]() Divided into four sections, each roughly corresponds to a different theme.
